DP83867ERGZ-R-EVM: EVM fails 1000Base-T IEEE 802.3 Compliance test

Part Number: DP83867ERGZ-R-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: USB-2-MDIO, MSP-EXP430F5529LP

Hi,

We are using DP83867IRPAP and having problems with Ether 1000Base-T IEEE802.3 Compliance Test.
First, we tested with the custom board but the test have been failing as I said
in the following E2E thread and it's still haven't pass yet.

e2e.ti.com/.../836932

Then we bought DP83867ERGZ-R-EVM and tried the compliance test using the EVM.
But it also fails in the same section as the custom board.
Failed section is "Difference A,B Peak output voltage".

To test with the EVM, we used USB-2-MDIO and MSP-EXP430F5529LP to
access to the DP83867 registers.
First, we setuped the registers as mentioned in application note(SNLA239A).=>Test fails.
Then, we found the following video of compliance test at TI website,
and it was setting different registers which are not setuped in the
above application note, so we tried it.But the test failed.
www.ti.com/.../support
Video:"Reduce design time with easy IEEE 802.3 compliance with TI's industrial
       Ethernet Gigabit PHY"

I want to make me sure that which setting should we follow,
video or application note. Which one is correct? And why it's not the same setting?
Please take a look at attached image for register settings in the video.

I heard that DP83867EVM have passed all the section of compliance test.
But why our EVM can't pass the test?

We used following oscilloscope:
Oscilloscope Name: LCRY0439N69156 Model: SDA813ZI-A
Oscilloscope Serial #: LCRY0439N69156
Computer: LCRY0439N69156
Oscilloscope firmware version: 8.9.0.3 (Build 263624)
QualiPHY core version: 8.5.0.1 (Build 241419)

best regards,
g.f.

  • Hi gf,

We will review and get back to you on this. For your setup, how long is the cable being used?

  • Hi Ross,

Thank you for the reply and sorry for the delay.
The cable between test fixture and the DP83867 are 6 inch.

    best regards,
    g.f.

  • Hi Ross,

    Do you have any updates?

    best regards,
    g.f.

  • Hi,

The EVM is tested with Tektronix scope and software.

    Regards,

    Geet

  • Hi Geet,

    Thank you for the reply.

So, do you mean that the test result will depend to the oscilloscope?
With customer board, we tested the compliance test using several oscilloscope(include Tektronix),
    but the test never passed.

And I also want to know which register configuration we should follow:
Configurations showed in above TI home page or application note.
    Which one?

    best regards,
    g.f.

  • On Configuration, I am not sure about where you are referring it on  "TI Home page". I recommend to follow the Application note.

    regards,

    Geet

  • Hi Geet,

    Thank you for the reply.

The "TI home page" where I refered is following:
    www.ti.com/.../support

Video:"Reduce Design Time with Easy IEEE 802.3 Compliance
TI's Industrial Ethernet Gigabit PHY DP83867"

The value of registers will showup at the time 2:59 in the video.

By the way, does the result of compliance test depends to which oscilloscope been used?

    best regards,
    g.f.

  • Hi,

Let us know if you are able to find the reason for failure ?

    Regards,

    Geet

  • Hi,

I am closing this thread. In case you need further assistance, please open new thread and provide reference to this thread.

  • Hi Geet,

    I'm sorry for the delay.
We are still working on it

In our measuring environment, the DP83867 EVM never passed following test of the compliance test.
    Test : [1000 Base-T, Difference A,B Peak Output Voltage(w/ Disturbing Signal)]
But when we requested the compliance test of EVM to the external measurement company,
the DP83867 EVM passed the test.
I don't know the details and which oscilloscope and software version they used.
They are saying that the signal mergin of following test have been changed in the newer software version.
    Test : [1000 Base-T, Difference A,B Peak Output Voltage(w/ Disturbing Signal)]
Previously the mergin was less than +/- 1% but it seems that  it is less than +/-2% in the new version.
I'm not sure this is correct or not becaus I couldn't find the information in the newest IEEE 802.3 Ethernet Standard document.

In the Ethernet Standard document(IEEE Std 802.3™-2018), it is written as follow:
    *********************************************************************************
The absolute value of the peak of the waveforms at points A and B shall differ by less than 1%.
    *********************************************************************************

If you have any information, could you share with me?

    best regards,
    g.f.

  • Hi,

We are not aware of any change in the test specifications as well. Our DP83867 EVM was tested for 1% and it passes the test.

We use UNH as our  3rd Party IEEE Compliance Lab.

Feel free to open new thread if you need additional information.

    Regards,

    Geet
