Does the DP83865 support PTP/PPS?
I seem to recall that DP83865 supported PTP/PPS but now I do not see any mention of this in the datasheet. Was it de-featured?

Hi Matt,
The DP83865 has not supported IEEE 1588 PTP/PPS in its Datasheet. Since this is an extremely old part, we recommend new designs consider the DP83867 or DP83869 if you are looking for PTP/PPS support.

Hi Justin,
What about IEEE 802.1AS (AVB) and Generalized Precision Time Protocol (gPTP)? Does the DP83865 support this?
I am trying to understand what functionalities are possible on our older boards which used the DP83865.
-Matt
Hi Matt,
The DP83865 does not support IEEE 802.1AS or gPTP as these standards were introduced after the release of the device.

Justin
Hi Justin,
Thanks for the quick response and sorry for all of the questions!
I'm hearing that an EMAC/PHY combination can support IEEE 1588 / IEEE 802.1AS even if the PHY doesn’t specifically support IEEE 1588 / IEEE 802.1AS.
Do you know anything about this?
-Matt
Hi Justin,
Let me clarify.
I'm hearing that some PHYs (such as DP83867) include PTP/gPTP time-stamping features. In this case, a system could potentially support IEEE 1588 / IEEE 802.1AS, even if the EMAC does not have these features.
However, I'm also hearing that if the EMAC *does* support IEEE 1588 (PTP)/ IEEE 802.1AS (gPTP) features, then the system could potentially support IEEE 1588 (PTP)/ IEEE 802.1AS (gPTP), even when using a PHY (such as DP83865) which does not have built-in support for these features.
Can you confirm? I'm new to IEEE 1588 / IEEE 802.1AS and this topic is very confusing to me.
-Matt
Hi Matt,
If the EMAC has support for PTP or gPTP, then you could support those protocols. The PHY does not also need to support if the MAC provides that.

Justin
