TUSB320LI: Bus powering a Type-C, USB 2.0 dongle using 5V at up to 3A

Part Number: TUSB320LI
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB320LAI

Hello,

I am designing a Type-C connected, USB 2.0 data-based dongle (UFP only), bus-powered device, which requires more than 1A.  Is the TUSB320LI (or TUSB320LAI) the right part to use in a bus-powered device?  I want to request current for 5V (only) with 1.5A or up to 3A, if needed.  The datasheet shows an example schematic (Figure 20) for UFP mode, but the TUSB320LI's VDD supply pin's source, "VDD_5V", seems to imply a self-powered configuration?  The D1 option diode to power VDD is helpful, but is it required for a bus-powered design?  I would much rather power the TUSB320LI off a local +3.3V DC/DC, which is sourced directly by VBUS...will this work?

Thanks,

Fred
