TPS65987DJEVM: are the MOSFETs are mandatory if external power path is designed.

Part Number: TPS65987DJEVM

hi,

When External Power path is designed, are both Q4A and Q4B mandatory according to TYPE-C PD protocol? can PP_EXT be directly connected with VBUS if PD certification is needed. if yes, can you share any materials about why those MOSFETs are needed?

  • Hello Ken,

The MOSFETs are used to help seperate your system from whatever is connected to the Type-C connector in case a fault condition like a hard short occurs. The USB spec also defines that the maximum capacitance that can be directly connected to VBUS without a device connected it 10uF, so this typically means that customers cannot connect VBUS directly to their system since the capacitance will be more than the 10uF.

Hope this helps answer your question
