SN65DP141: SN65DP141

Part Number: SN65DP141
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB1044

Hi Sir,

I want to confirm whether sn65dp141 have a re-timer function?

I have a use case of USB3.1+DP1.2, we use a USB Type-C Cable to connect a PC(Notebook) with a AR Glass,

PC will transfer DP signal to Glass by the USB Type-C Cable and Glass will transfer UVC data stream to the PC by the USB Type-C Cable.

The USB Type-C Cable is 1.5m long and very thin, so we want use a re-timer on the cable. Just a Cable with 2 USB Type-C Port.

Does sn65dp141 can meet this feature? If not, what part of TI can meet?

  • Hi,

DP141 is a redriver only, not a retimer.

If you want to build a USB Type-C active cable, please consider the TUSB1044. But the TUSB1044 is a redriver only, we do not have Type-C retimer solution.

    Thanks

  • Hi Sir,

I have searched many brands of IC, and i found it's hard to find a re-timer for DP. Most are re-driver.

    Why?

  • Hi,

For DP, the source and the sink use sideband AUX for link training.

With a retimer between the source and the sink, the retimer basically breaks the link between the source and the sink into two parts:

    • Link between the source and the retimer
    • Link between the retimer and the sink

So the sink does not see the actual waveform from the source, it will see the waveform from the retimer which will be different from the source.

For a linear redriver, as long as the signal is within its linearity region, the linear redriver does not break the link. The sink sees the actual waveform from the source.

If both the retimer and the source snoop the AUX bus and set their SWING and Pre-emphasis level base on the snooped value, the waveform between the source and the retimer may not be ideal depends on the link characteristic, retimer design, etc. But the sink has no idea on the non-ideal waveform because it can't see it. This non-ideal waveform may break the link training.

The 2nd issue is that the retimer RX CDR may take longer time to lock and recovery the data depends on the income data quality, this can also cause the link training to time out and fail the DP.

So from the link training perspective, most solutions choose to use linear redriver, not retimer for DP.

    Thanks
