TCAN1042H: Alternative part for ATA6563

Part Number: TCAN1042H
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TCAN4550

Hi team,

can u advise me on alternative parts for CAN transceiver (ATA6563) and Ext CAN FD Controller (MCP2518)?

I just chose TCAN1042H as an example? need suggestion from your professional view. Thanks

  • Also, could you please tell me how's the difference between ours and those in lists? Thanks

  • Hi Danny,

TCAN1042 with a V suffix would be my recommended replacement here. This device supports 5Mbps CAN FD speeds, features integrated IO voltage translation, and a standby mode. Taking a look at both device's datasheets, I don't see many differences to note. Most importantly both devices follow the ISO 11898-2:2016 standard. The most significant difference I saw was TCAN1042's shorter loop times, which may appear as slight timing differences when using the different device.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

    Regards,
    Eric Schott

  • Hi Eric,

Thanks for your detailed explanation! Helpful!

I'd like to follow up and see the case, Ext CAN FD Controller (MCP2518) (which it seems you missed) Thanks!

Also are those parts (ATA6563 and Tcan1042) P2P?

  • Hi Danny,

Sorry about that! Unfortunately, TI doesn't currently offer any dedicated CAN FD controller ICs except for TCAN4550, which also features an integrated transceiver. Because of this and other differences, it wouldn't be able to replace MCP2518 without other design changes.

TCAN1042V shares the same pinout and functionality as ATA6563, so yes, these devices are pin-to-pin compatible.
