BQ24392: BQ24392 for USB-C connector

Are you only interested in detecting dedicated chargers, no data +charging?  Are there specific charger types that need to be supported?

This port will be used for both data and charging. 

The only charger we need to detect is BC1.2 (D+ and D- shorted), but as many other types as possible would be good, too. 

I'm planning to use comparators on the CC pins to detect "USB Type-C Current" also, which I think will replace CDP on computers in the future.

I was also looking at BQ24055, which is 1 chip and cheaper, but doesn't detect Apple/etc. chargers, and there are posts on here saying it's NRND?  https://e2e.ti.com/support/power-management/f/196/t/557805 https://e2e.ti.com/support/power-management/f/196/t/571330

But https://www.ti.com/product/BQ24050 is the datasheet for BQ24055 and it says "Active".  https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/BQ24055DSSR/12596436 also says Active.   So I'm confused about that.

But the extra cost of BQ24392+BQ24092 to allow detecting Apple chargers is probably worth it anyway. 

But if I go to https://www.ti.com/product/BQ24092 and then look at https://www.ti.com/power-management/battery-management/charger-ics/products.html it has 283 total parts, likewise https://www.ti.com/interface/usb/redrivers-multiplexers/products.html has 65 total parts, so it's little overwhelming trying to find other similar ICs in these lists.

It sounds like the BQ24392 is a good fit for your application.  We don't have another similar USB charge detect switch like that,

Well, BQ24055 is not actually a switch, it just measures the D+/D- lines to achieve the same thing.  I'm not sure how that works exactly, but as long as it does work, I don't really care, something like that would be a good solution, too.

and for USB 2.0 Type-C you can short the DP lines and the DM lines and skip the mux.  

Well the charger or charging port on the computer shorts the lines (and then they are unshorted after detection if it's a computer port).

I believe the USB 2 short mentioned was for the 2 sets DP and DM on the USB-C connector. These pins can be shorted at the connector.

The switch integrated with BQ24392 connects DP and DM to the USB 2 PHY based on the detected connection. If a SDP and CDP if connected then data is allowed to flow.

Yes, the 2 sets of DP and DM pins on the USB-C connector are always connected together.
