TPS25750: Cannot Program using GUI

Thanks for the response. I actually have a custom board with the TPS25750D, is the GUI only meant to program the EVM. How would I program the the IC on my board.

Chuck : I have exact same question...All I did was copy EVM design to build my custom board. Didnt change much from ref design. now I want to program the flash on this custom board but it wont flash. FLASHING DEVICE window is stuck at 0%. I will repeat Owen's question : Can TI GUI be used to program the flash on a custom board? If not, how do I program the flash on custom board?

Ok Understood...I wish there was a note in the ref design which says that "do not copy this circuit onto custom design". that way I would have been careful. Anyways....now that I know, I bought an EEPROM burner and removed the flash from my board and burned the image and solder down the burned flash back on my board. I tried two versions of flash. see attached. But when I connect my board using TYPE-C USB, all the voltages keep fluctuating on my board. if I dopopulate the flash, then everything is stable and I get 5V from the USB. Board sch attached in pdf format.

What am I doing wrong? I copied entire ckt from the EVM ref design.

1. can you confirm that my flash image is correct? I tried to generate two images...one asking for 20V sink. ssecond configuring as 5V sink. But no matter which image I use, whenever flash is present on the board, all voltages fluctuate constantly and I am not able to get 20V on my board (or 5V) using the programmed flash.

I have the I2Cm lines tied directly to an EEPROM. 

I am able to program the Memory using Total Phase Flash tool, using a binary file generated from the web GUI.

But now I am not seeing any I2C traffic from the PTSP25750D.

LDO3V3 and LDO1V5 come up.

Any other suggestions?

Is  your expert back? Its been more than a week since I asked this question? Can you please expedite this? if possible, I would liek to get this resolvd by phone. Can I talk to someone via phone?

The ADCIN1 and ADCIN2 configuration that you have selected, AlwaysEnableSink is not the recommended option for EEPROM boot.  We strongly recommend that you select SafeMode for this operation.

Can you try depopulating R61 and R62 and populating R7 and R8?  This will force the part into SafeMode which is better suited for EEPROM Boot.

thanks for the detailed info. I updated ADC pins in safe mode but I still dont get 20V. Looks like the flash loads and then 5V collapses and comes back up....and then flash tries to load again and again 5V collapses.

1. Can you check my bin file that I uploaded. Is that generated correctly? if possible, try to download on your board and make sure it works?

2. Also, what is the USB cable I should use? I am using below USB adapter to power my board. It is 65W only, but my flash (bin) file is for 100W. would that be the reason why 5V is collapsing? can you recommend some standard USB adapter for 100W?

3. If my flash requests 100W, but adapter is only 65W, would 5V collapse like in my case or flash will settle with 65W only and generate 20V still?

4. I see that on my board IRQ pin is no connect. pin-18. Is that ok? or do I need to pull it up to 3.3V externally?

5. what else can I do on my board?

PS: yes, for now, this application is sink only.

Please upload the config json file that is saved when you click the export project button as well as the full flash binary that can be saved by clicking the Generate Full Flash Binary button.

I can look at both to see if there is anything going on with them as well as load them onto one of my EVMS.

Ok. waiting for your input. As we are stuck right now and cant get 20V at all. without this, we cannot proceed further. At this point, there are 2 items that can be problem 

1. my flahs bin file is generated incorrectly.

2. I am using wrong USB cable to plug into my board.

Looks like board connections cannot be any issue as I made sure it matches with that in the link you provided above.

I apologize for the delay.  

The file that you sent me was the binary output from the configuration GUI.

The configuration GUI has the option to export the settings into a JSON file.  This file is saved by clicking the EXPORT SETTINGS button on the GUI.  This will allow me to look at how you are configuring the part and see if there is any configuration issues.

Hi Chuck...thanks for getting back to me. Please see attached json file.I also took a snapshot of the GUI settings when I generated this image. see .doc as well, if .json doesnt help.

However were you able to download this on your eval and see if it works? because that will tell us for sure if my file is corrupted or not.

I was able to spend a few minutes on this issue today, but I was not able to get the EVM programmed to match your configuration.  I will be out of the office until Wednesday next week, so I have asked a colleague to look into this issue while I am out.

All of TI will be out of the office tomorrow, so responses should come some time on Monday.

I did some more debug but after thee chnages with Chuck recomended, our flash seems to be loading but then (I am assuming) during handshaking for 20V, something is going wrong and 20V is not coming up. Maybe our power brick is not right. ....Is there anything I need to look out for, from the source side, that it is capable of supplying 20V to my board? how do I make sure that my source can supply 20V?

ok. If that is the case, then I cant doubt my lenovo  power brick, which was actually designed for lenovo laptop but I am using for my board. It shows 65W. what else can I check to see why I am not getting 20V?

I will buy this eval board. It says "Built in SPI/I2C Debugger and Programmer". does this mean that we  can use this to program the flash on my custom board?

Unfortunately the Power DUO board that we have provided does not support external flash programming.  It is a TI MCU that has a custom firmware load that allows a PC to update the EVM firmware, but not a global flash programmer.

The best way to be able to see what is happening on a type C bus is to purchase a bus analyzer such as this one that is sold by Total Phase.  Embedded Excellence - Total Phase

This analyzer will allow you to view all of the PD traffic and better debug any issue that you are having.

Thanks Chuck...However this is so simple concept that it should not require debugging. I had the design reviewed by TI member and he had approved it. both sch and layout....and beyond that we are not doing anything complicated. so I was not planning to invest on buying the debug tools...but looks like we will need to buy this.

can you also recommend any flash programmer so that we can just hook up that external programmer to the 3 pin header from the flash on mycustom board? rather than removing the flash, putting it on external flash burner, burning the flash and then solder down the flash back to it the custom board?

Is there any troubleshooting guide from TI that I can see and try to debug that way?

All we want is 20V on our board. nothing else....

We use the TotalPhase Aardvark that you can find in this link for programming PCB.  This programmer comes with a 10 pin to single 100mil header breakout connector that will allow you to connect SCL, SDA, and GND to your 3 pin header.

They also provide a free package that supports eeprom programming.  https://www.totalphase.com/products/flash-center/

These two will allow you to update the EEPROM.

1. If IRQ pins are floating for Master (pin-18 = I2Cs_IRQ) and Slave(Pin-10 = I2Cm_IRQ) I2C interfaces, would that cause issues for TPS25750D bootup after flash is loaded?

2. do the IRQ pins have internal pullup ?

The reason is I used old datasheet to design my board and these pins were not included there as IRQ. so I dont have any way to connect external pullup resistor. they are no connect in my design. so need to know if this is the issue or I should focus on something else.

Thanks for the comment....I already got the answer that internal pullups are not present. I probed a floating pin on my board and that pin shows zero. meaning its not pulled up internally.

Based on your explanation, are you saying that IRQ can be left floating if my goal is just to get 20V on the board and nothing else...? I am not using TPS25750D for anything else. Please confirm.

Also, how can I clear Extern IRQ ISR in my firmware (I am assume this is the flash image that you are calling firmware?)

If your only goal is to achieve 20V if it is available, then you can use the NegotiateHighestVoltage option for the ADCIN1 and ADCIN2 registers.  This will cause the TPS25750 to negotiate the highest possible voltage contract.

The IRQ can be left floating, as long as you used the internal pullup resistor to bias the resistor.  The IRQ registers are used to drive the I2C_IRQs signal based on the internal interrupt events.  These can all by masked resulting in no function for these features.

I use the flash image and configured firmware interchangeably.

I think I explained this, right from my very first message, that all I am trying to do is get 20V on my custom board.

"How" can I clear Extern IRQ ISR in my firmware?

"How" can I  use  the internal pullup presistor to bias the resistor?

"How can I do these in flash image? as the GUI does not have any such options. I provided a word doc GUI Snapshott of what settings I selected wihle generating Flash image using the TI GUI.

"How" can I configure the firmware ?

I apologize but I am very new to USB-C design. This is a learning curve for me into the USB design foray..I thought the only thing that is required to get 20V is to "generate a flash image by answering 7 or 8 questions from the TI GUI" and thats it....if you  can provide me a document which explain how to deal with the USB-C debug/troubleshooting, that will work as well.

The Host interface is documented in the TPS25750 Host Interface Technical Reference Manual.  This document will explain how to talk to the TPS25750D with an external MCU through the I2C interface.
