USB-CTM-MINIDK-EVM: Charging via USB-C

Part Number: USB-CTM-MINIDK-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65982

Hello! I have an USB-CTM-MINIDK-EVM, that works fine if using external DELL 20V power supply. I would like to run it from the MacBook Pro charger via USB-C (connector J30).

The board is working (supplied by the DRP, from laptop), but USB hubs are not operational, and not charging the connected laptop either (via the DRP port). Is it intentional? Can we set up the board to activate charging ? I would like to avoid the DELL charger.

Thank you

Andras

  • Hi Andras,

Does your PD adapter support up to 20V? I would suggest using a 20V PD adapter for the full feature set. From your problem description, it sounds like the main system rail is below 20V.

If this answers your question, PLEASE select This resolved my issue

    Thank you,
    Eric

  • Hello

I checked the PD adaptor. It is an Apple Mac Book pro charger. I used a STUSB1602 based eval board, with a simple terminal program.

    Received Source PDOs:

    1) 5.00V 2.40A
    2) 9.00V 3.00A
    3) 20.00V 3.00A

    I selected manually profile #3.

    >r 0 3
    Requested 3 : 20.00V 3.00A

    Role: Sink - Explicit contract CC2 Profile 3 20.00V

So I can confirm, the PD Charger is OK, supports 20V@3A.

I checked the PD protocol between USB-CTM-MINIDK-EVM and the charger. It seems, charger keeps sending the Source PDOs, but no any reply from the board. So it remains at 5V.

Is it possible, that the J30 is not recognized as an USB-C input, no CC, no communication ? Maybe U43 chip is not operational ?

  • Hi Andras,

I have not been able to reproduce this issue on my end using my USB-CTM-MINIDK-EVM. I see 20V get accepted and a 20V PDO is entered. Do you ever see the blue LED for 20V turn on?

    Thank you,
    Eric
  • No, no blue led (see photo below)

I guess U43 TPS65982 chip is "empty". Does not communicate with the Charger.

BTW, I had to reprogram the other TPS chip (TPS65986) as discussed in the other thread:

    How can I program U43 (TPS65982) ? Is it necessary ?

  • Hello,
How can I get the USB-C power input live ? DO I need to reprogram the U43 ?
    Please advise
  • Hi Andras,

I would suggest reprogramming U43. It seems like you might not have the PD controller correctly configured.

    Thank you,
    Eric
