MAX3232: what voltage caps to use

Part Number: MAX3232

Team, please provide some guidance to my customer's question:

I am looking at adding a TI MAX3232 to my design.  It requires external caps for the charge pump, denoted as C1 – C4 in the spec.  I understand that for a 3.3V application, these should all be 0.1µF in value, I am pretty sure that a 10% tolerance part is fine.  I need to know what voltage rating to use.  Is a 16V part fine, or should I go with 25V for more margin?  I think that the charge pumps develop +/- 10V.  The tolerance and voltage specs for these caps are not in the TI spec.

Thanks

Viktorija

  • Hi Viktorija,

Using 16 V capacitors is fine. The voltage at the V+ and V- charge pump outputs will be at most +/- 2 * VCC. You are right about the nominal values and tolerances as well.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Regards,
    Max
