I have a question regarding to the Input voltage
It states that all voltage values are with respect to GND. Is applying negative voltage to the input pins not a recommended usage?
The customer is concerned that the device may be damaged as a result of negative voltage being applied to the input pins due to undershooting.

The electrical characteristics specify VIK, i.e., the maximum (actually, minimum) voltage at which the clamping diode passes −12 mA. The typical voltage for −12 mA is about −0.8 V; see Input and Output Characteristics of Digital Integrated Circuits at 5-V Supply Voltage:
For practical purposes, keep the voltage above −0.5 V if you don't want a current to flow, but lower voltages will not damage the device (as long as the current is not high enough to result in thermal damage).
The datasheet usually stipulates that the absolute maximum input voltage levels can be exceeded so long as you do not exceed the current rating of the input clamp diode. This datasheet doesn't provide that stipulation or give the current rating of the input clamp diode.
This is maybe because there is a second diode at the input which is not a clamping diode, but I'm not sure:

Hi,
I would just use VIK from the datasheet shown above. The test condition here is -18mA and I would not exceed that value and/or -1.5V on VIN.
