What is the difference between MM74C74N and CD74AC74E?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CD74AC74

Please Advise.  What is the difference between MM74C74N vs. CD74AC74E? Are they compatible?

Do they have the same Truth Table?

 Thanks,

Adam

  • Adam,

The datasheet and Truth Table for the MM74C74N is here:  www.ti.com/lit/ds/snos336a/snos336a.pdf ,

    and the CD74AC74 is here: www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/cd74ac74.pdf .

Functionally they are the same, but the MM74 can operate with Vcc to 15V where the CD74 is only 5.5V.  You will have to evaluate your existing operating conditions to determine if they are interchangeable in your design.

  • Adam,

The first difference is that the MM74C74N is from National Semiconductor when we acquired them, and it is obsolete. the CD74AC74E is from Harris Semiconductor, and it is still an active part (it can be ordered).

These devices appear to be pin-for-pin compatible, and have the same function, however, the CLR and PRESET pins act differently. Their function tables from the datasheets are below. There was one difference that I could find which I noted with a red "1."
