SN74LS292: SN74LS292

Part Number: SN74LS292
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN74HC4040, CD4059A

Hello,

I want to derive an 8KHZ clock from 2 MHz master clock. Can I use SN74LS292 for this purpose?

Or I have to go for other procedure. Hope you will help me out.

Thanks & Regards,

Om Patel

  • Hi Om,
To get exactly 8 kHz from 2 MHz, you need to divide by 250. The device you have selected only divides by powers of 2... so the closest you could get is 2^8 = 256. Is 7.8125 kHz close enough for your application? If it is, why not use a simpler approach, like the SN74HC4040 -- it will have vastly better power consumption, and still provides a 2^8 (256) divider output (Q_H output).

There are other devices and circuits that can precisely divide by 250. For example, the CD4059A is a programmable "divide-by-N" counter. While it may take a little while to figure out how it works (carefully read the first page and examine the functional diagram), it will do the job quite well.
