TMS320F28388D: is the clock generated with the same pin B12 (called MCU_GPIO154) for the ethernet and EtherCAT port?

Good day. I am posting this inquiry on behalf of the customer.

"I have a very specific question regarding TMS320F28388DZWTS. Why, in the TMDSCNCD28388D rev B folder in the MCU063B (002) _Sch.PDF file, is the clock generated with the same pin B12 (called MCU_GPIO154) for the ethernet and EtherCAT port?


Assuming you are using EPWM5B?
Could I use respectively the ENET_RMII_CLK pin for the ethernet transceiver and the ESC_PHY_CLK for the two EtherCAT transceivers?
does the pin ENET_RMII_CLK only apply to the RMII standard or also to MII?"

    MCU_GPIO154 is not used to clock the ethernet / etherCAT. It is clocked from P0_25MHz_CLK and P1_25MHz_CLK. If you wish to have MCU_GPIO154 clock both ethernet and etherCAT, you need to remove R30 / R34 and populate R29 and R33

    I have decided that I will use ESC_PHY_CLK pin for the two etherCAT transmitters, I am wondering if the ENET_RMII_CLK pin is adequate for an ethernet transmitter and if it can be used without any problems on the firmware plane? maybe I get confused when I read the RMII and the initials MII, is it not the same pheriperal?"

    Manoj was referring to the resistors on the TMDSCNCD28388D evaluation board (which he provided schematic images of), this wouldn't be in the datasheet.

    You can use ESC_PHY_CLK pin, but please note our recommendation from the F2838x TRM section below:

    ENET_RMII_CLK can be used in internal or external clock mode. Please see below from F2838x TRM section. Which mode is the customer wanting to use?

Trying to redraw the ethernet / EtherCAT part of the schematic, I realized that for the ethernet transceiver the pins ENET_REVMII_MDIO_RST, ENET_PPS0, ENET_PPS1 of the TMS320F28388DZWTS are not used; similarly, for the EtherCAT transceivers the pins ESC_LED_STATE_RUN, ESC_LATCH0, ESC_LATCH1, ESC_SYNC0, ESC_SYNC1 of the TMS320F28388DZWTS are not used
    Why are these pins of the TMS320F28388DZWTS not used?
    and what good would they be? I can't find a description anywhere, even a brief one.

    Please help to advise. Thank you for extending your help.

  • Hi Marvin,

    Please check the F2838x device TRM Ethernet (EMAC) and EtherCAT sections for further info on these signals and features.

    for the ethernet transceiver the pins ENET_REVMII_MDIO_RST, ENET_PPS0, ENET_PPS1 of the TMS320F28388DZWTS are not used

    I believe these are optional signals and depend on the PHY device being used.

    for the EtherCAT transceivers the pins ESC_LED_STATE_RUN, ESC_LATCH0, ESC_LATCH1, ESC_SYNC0, ESC_SYNC1 of the TMS320F28388DZWTS are not used
    1. STATE LED is not supported on this device. See Table 31-9. 'Status LED Options and Priority' in theF2838x TRM for details.
    2. The LATCH and SYNC signals do not connect to the PHY devices. They can be accessed from the ControlCARDs HSEC connector pins (i.e. accessed at the baseboard).
