RTOS/TMS320F28377S: TI RTOS vc FreeRTOS

Hello there,

I come from an ARM enviroment. I am very used to FreeRTOS on STM32 devices. It is very feature rich. I am now considering on switching to C2000 device for a power electronic application. I was wondering either TI RTOS is as feature rich as FreeRTOS and also, does it really work the same way (like really, not generally speaking)? Is it ready to go in 5 minutes or are there any painfull ports and configurations? I would appreciate all help!

Hi Lukasz,

The TI-RTOS kernel is supported out of the box for C28377. If you want to kick the tires, I recommend you download SYS/BIOS (the kernel part of TI-RTOS) from here: software-dl.ti.com/.../index.html. Use the highest version that matches up with your CCS. You should be able to install it into C:\ti and start CCS. CCS will find it and prompt you to complete the install (and then restart CCS). You can then open Resource Explorer and import an example, build it and run it. Note: we have many customers using TI-RTOS on C2000 (as well as thousands on other TI devices like MSP43x, CC32xx, CC26xx, CC13xx, C6000, CortexA, etc.)

Both FreeRTOS and TI-RTOS are preemptive schedulers (so the highest priority is always running). Both have memory managers, critical region managers, synchronization mechanism, etc. TI-RTOS has some nice debug features with integrated CCS (e.g. Tools->RTOS Object Viewer).

I'm not sure if there has been an "official" FreeRTOS port to C28377. We probably should move this thread to the device forum to find out for sure. Would you like me to move this thread to C2000 for more info on the FreeRTOS port?

Hello, thank you very much for explanation. I should then grab a launchpad and check everything out. Sure we could move the topic to get more info on freertos.
