TMDSSOLARPEXPKIT: Anything except TMDSSOLARCEXPKIT for building a lab environment PV systems with greater power rating

Hi, there!

I have found several lab-environment test bed with TMDSSOLARCEXPKIT --- Concerto-based Solar Explorer Development Kit, but this set can only handle a 50W solar input.

While I was trying to find similar board that could handle larger power ratings, I found TMDSHVMPPTKIT --- High Voltage Isolated Solar MPPT Developers Kit, which provides 400 DC output. It says that working with TMSHV1PHINVKIT, it could provide AC output. However the latter, TMSHV1PHINVKIT, seems to be not available any more.

Basically I was trying to build a microgrid power system prototype, it has pv input, battery storage, DC-DC converter with MPPT, DC-AC inverter, and connect to grid. The system will be a scaled down version, but I am not sure if a 50W PV system, if I use TMDSSOLARCEXPKIT --- Concerto-based Solar Explorer Development Kit, was scaled too much. Will that be the case?

Hi Yue,

I might recommend considering the TMDSSOLARUINVKIT as a less scaled alternative to the Solar Experimenter's kit:

Note that, for the most part, the TMDSHV1PHINVKIT has been replaced by the TIEVM-HV-1PH-DCAC:

Thanks for your reply, now I am using TMDSSOLARPEXPKIT, any suggestion on grid emulator? It's impossible to find a grid simulator that supports 24V AC output, maybe I need additional AC-AC converter to get an 24V. Besides, the lowest power rating of any grid simulator is several kWs. Will that work? Are there any other suggestions?

Yue,

Here are two options:

1. We tested this design with a step down transformer and grid input on the other side.

2. Alternatively, you can use any AC source, that is capable of outputting 24VAC which are many..

you can then connect a res. load at the output such that the power draw by the resistor at 24VAC is greater than what the solar explorer kit can provide.. we document this in the user guide to see the direction of current..

The idea being you don;t want the AC source to sink in current which it may not be designed to handle.

Thank you for your reply. Now I am looking at two options which are both variable AC power source, they both have the capability of outputing 24v ac, one with 3A max output while the other with 10A max output. Is it necessary to buy the 10A output one because if I bought a 3A with 24V (14Vrms), the maximum power of simulated grid input is too small compared to a 50W PV system?

You will need one that meets the power rating you want to test the system at.
