Grace Feedback - Confusing message when attempting to set clock source to DCOCLK when DCO disabled

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430G2231

In the Grace Power User screen for BCS+ module, if the Disable DCO is checked and the Clock Source for MCLK and SMCLK are set to LFXTCLK (for the MSP430G2231), any attempt to change the Clock Source for either the MCLK or SMCLK to DCOCLK results in the following confusing tooltip popup message:

DCO is currently used by MCLK and/or SMCLK.
Change clock souce to external before disabling DCO.

This is confusing because it does not really describe the issue the user is attempting to do. It is the same popup message displayed when attempting to Disable DCO when the Clock Source for  either MCLK or SMCLK is set to DCOCLK - which is an appropriate message in that case (although external is not completely accurate because the 12Khz VLOCLK is not external).

When attempting to set MCLK or SMCLK clock source to DCOCLK when DCO is disabled, I think an appropriate message should be similar to:

DCO is currently disabled.
Enable DCO before changing MCLK and/or SMCLK clock source to DCOCLK.

  • Dan,

Thanks for the cogent feedback.  I agree with your point and have filed a new bug item (2458 - "Attempt to change Clock Source to DCOCLK results in confusing tooltip message"), which should be resolved in our next release.
