MSP430FR6877: Minimal design to start a debug session with MSP-FET

I have designed a prototype board with all required components but now i have placed only the microcontroller and debug header no other components. The board getting power from debugger.

The debugger could not detect target, later i connected the 32.768KHz crystal but still the same.

Do i need the reset circuit too.

Please suggest me minimal circuit to start a debug session.

No other components? Not even the capacitors required at each DVcc pin? Or the pullup resistor on RST?

Yes no other components, I used to do same with AVR series.

Later I tried with placing crystal and loading caps

i just want to know what will be the minimum requirement to start debugging, as in AVR I start just with an microcontroller and power source no reset circuit no crystal no decoupling cap ?

will a faulty crystal or Reset circuit will affect debugger operation ?

Maybe you should check out the MSP Hardware Tools User Guide (SLAU278), specifically chapter 2 "Design Considerations for In-Circuit Programming".

You definitely need the reset circuit and it would be best to have the bypass caps installed. Also verify your connection to either VCC_TOOL or VCC_TARGET.

Tried it with reset circuit components placed but still it's not working.

Do i need crystals too for the debug. Is the controller dependent on ext crystal for debug

Another thing am confused me, for external crystal some evaluation boards using internal loading capacitor, no external cap needed as written on guide, but FR6877 is unclear about this,

And similarly some controllers have internal RST pull up, FR6877 have internal RST pull up. So is the reset pull up necessary.

Hi asim,

You can find the minimum requirements in the following documents:

MSP430FR687x(1) Mixed-Signal Microcontrollers datasheet (Rev. C) | Section 7

MSP430 Hardware Tools User's Guide (Rev. AH) | Chapter 2

Additionally, Power needs to be applied to all DVCC and AVCC pins.

Thank you all for your response and useful suggestions, But none responded my actual query. I wanted to know minimum circuit required to start debug a proto board for msp430fr6877 just to confirm debugger connections are OK. As the specific chip have inbuilt reset pullup again the MSP-FET tool has inbuilt reset pull up so reset circuit may not be essential. Again i was suspicious on the crystal but later found that is not essential for a debug session.

My first board seems damaged by overheating during soldering, but second one worked smoothly, second one just the controller not a single other component. i have added one picture of my connections.
