Tool/software:
Team,
My customer is having issues with the MSP-FET giving the unable to connect error. They have gone through the troubleshooting with IAR, and were not successful. Error they are getting is below.
Please help get past it.
Thanks
Viktorija
Hi
Dose the customer using SBW or 4-wire JTAG? How dose the customer connect the MSP-FET with the device in the IAR below?
By the way, can customer to to use CCS or Uniflash try to connect the devcie?
And they can also try to install the low level driver of the MSP-FET
Gary,
See the feedback below from the customer.
Does the customer using SBW or 4-wire JTAG? How dose the customer connect the MSP-FET with the device in the IAR below?
<customer> - We use 4-wire JTAG and we are using the same settings as you mentioned in your screen shot.
By the way, can customer to to use CCS or Uniflash try to connect the devcie?
<customer> - I tried IAR, CCS and UniFlash. None of them helped to connect to the device.
And they can also try to install the low-level driver of the MSP-FET
<customer> - I already tried installing the MSP-FET low level driver, It did not help either.
Dose customer connect from MSP-FET to the device as below?(powered external)
Have they try to use SBW?
Gary,
See the feedback below from the customer.
I am sure MSP-FET is connected as per the screen shot you provided .
In the same setup (everything being same including USB and ribbon cables, target, power conditions, laptop), if I just change the new MSP-FET with my old MSP-FET, it works very well.
The new MSP-FET is not getting detected in windows’ device manager at all.
I have not tried SBW yet.
he new MSP-FET is not getting detected in windows’ device manager at all.
I think you mean the old issue MSP-FET is not be detected by PC's device manager as below, right?
If so you can try the steps in the 5.6.5.3 MSP-FET HID Cold Boot
Hi Gary,
From customer -
I tried MSP-FET HID Cold Boot option as mentioned in e2e discussion.
After the cold boot procedure, I am able to see MSP-FET as HID compatible device in window’s device manager, but neither CCS nor IAR is able to recover it. CCS throws an error saying – “Recovery failed”
I am able to see MSP-FET as HID compatible device
Do you mean it can be detected as below?
If no, it seems this MSP-FET is damaged.
Hi Gary, We had a replacement MSP-FET sent and it is exhibiting the same behavior. Please see attached errors our customer sees from IAR (v8.10.2)., hopefully that is enough info to get to the root cause.
Thanks

Hi Gary Gao,
Let me know if you need any extra information other than those screenshots (in MSP_FET_failure.docx).
Sorry for the late reply, so if you hit the last picture you show to recovery the MSP-FET, it still not be recovered?
What do you see in the COM port in PC device manager when you connect the MSP-FET?
Could you install a CCS/ Uniflash to do a program with it?
so if you hit the last picture you show to recovery the MSP-FET, it still not be recovered?
- It does not recover, After hitting 'ok' on last picture, it poped-up msg saying "Starting debug session :Loading debug file...Emulator: Initializing update...". It stays in this screen for couple of seconds and went back to the seconds last picture of that document.
What do you see in the COM port in PC device manager when you connect the MSP-FET?
I do see it gets added under 'Human Interface Device' category. It got added as 'USB input device'. I don't see it under 'Ports (COM & LPT)' category.
Under IAR also, I see it as HID_FET, see the screenshot below -
Could you install a CCS/ Uniflash to do a program with it?
I tried with UniFlash and it gives same error, see below pictures -
On the same setup (everything being same including USB cable, ribbon cable, target board, laptop all same), if I just replace the new MSP_FET with my old MSP_FET, it starts working well.
It seems to be damaged, I don't know where you buy it, you can ask to change a new one.
initiated the replacement for the first faulty one and I got second from TI-Singapore (I believe)
Both of them are not working now?
Not sure if below information helps to dig further -
Both new MSP FETs I received (both are not working) has 'CE' written on back side of it. The one which is working (my original) has not 'CE' written on it.
I am using IAR MSP430 v8.10.2
I am able to recover both of my MSP FETs.
I used another machine (somehow it did not get recovered using my machine) and used MSP430Flasher (v1.3.20) and used command "MSP430Flasher -n NO_TARGET -s". By doing so on the other machine, both of the MSP FETs are recovered and now I am able to use them for debugging/flashing on my machine.
That is great you get a way to make it work. That seems wired why the Uniflash or CCS can't do that. Thanks for your sharing.
