Interfacing external ADC with MSP430

Hello all,

I am currently working with the ESW427 dev board from Softbaugh (has the MSP430fw427 chip on it...no ADC). In order to get value from an analog input; I can hook up an external ADC to one of it's i/o's correct? If so, is there one you recommend; anyone have notes/files related to this?

Hi Brock,

yes, you can connect external ADC to the controllers I/O. To give you a recommendation you should provide some additional info (because i.e. TI has more than 450 different AD converters; refer to http://focus.ti.com/analog/docs/dataconvertershome.tsp?familyId=82&contentType=4&DCMP=TIHomeTracking&HQS=Other+OT+home_p_dc).

So pls provide info on:

- number of channels you need
- resolution
- how do you want to interface the ADC to the MCU (i.e. by SPI interface)
- are ther limitations regarding the package size
..

I too need an external ADC: 12 to 16 bit resolution, single channel, SAR, supporting a ref voltage of upto 5V...

application: to read output of a pressure sensor ADP5100 which gives output varying from 0.45 to 4.5volt.

At 0kPa pressure, the output volt is around 2.5

the ADC will be connected to msp430fg4618.cant use its internal adc since its max ref volt is 3.6volt

Cut your signal with a resistor divider followed by a unity gain buffer.
