MSP-FET Blow JTAG Security Fuse

Hi there,

I am trying to blow the JTAG security fuse on an MSP430G2553 using an MSP-FET as the hardware and Elpotronics FET-Pro430 as the software. I understand that the 2xx series requires the TEST/VPP line to be connected as per the image below for SBW. However, once I connect that line I cannot seem to establish JTAG communication with the FET-Pro software or even Code Composer Studio. Disconnecting TEST/VPP allows me to flash the chip without issues. Could this be an MSP-FET hardware malfunction?

Hi Kyle,

1. Do you use a TI board (if so which one) or a custom board?

2. For a custom board: can you please provide a full schematic or connection list of exactly which pins on your MSP430 are connected to which pin #'s on the JTAG header on the MSP-FET tool? Including any passive components on any of the lines? Here is the header pin numbering, note where the key slot on the socket is:

3. Do you include the R2 resistor on the TCK line pin 7 on the MSP-FET connected to TEST/SBWTCK on the MSP - this is needed if you want to blow the fuse.

4. In addition, can you let us know how you are powering your board - is there any external power supply connected, or are you powering the board only from the MSP-FET tool?

5. When you cannot establish communication with the MSP-FET - what do the LEDs on the MSP-FET look like?

Hi Katie,

I'm not using a TI board, I'm just programming a lone MSP430G2553 on a breadboard
The schematic I'm using is identical to the schematic in the previous post
Yes, I'm using a 330 ohm resistor
The processor is powered only by the MSP-FET tool (VCC_TOOL on pin 2)
The green LED stays lit and the red LED blinks a couple of times and then stops

I ended up purchasing a FlashPro-430 programmer from Elpotronic and was successfully able to blow the JTAG fuse using the circuit I posted above. I think there may be something wrong with the MSP-FET and I will contact the reseller for a replacement.

Hi Kyle,

Thanks for the additional information. It sounds like someone else is running into the same problem as you: e2e.ti.com/.../1719910 I am working with the tools team to see if some change was made between the MSP-FET and MSP-FET430UIF regarding blowing the fuse. I am hoping that the people I need to help answer this have not left for the holidays yet, but we will see what happens in that regard - we'll definitely work to get you an answer, there just unfortunately may be some delay.

Hi Kyle,

We tried taking the MSP430G2553 device in both SBW and JTAG mode and were able to blow the fuse without issue using MSP-FET, with the device in TI's standard MSP-TS430PW28A target socket board. You can see the schematic for this board in www.ti.com/lit/pdf/slau278 on p. 59 section B.10. Can you confirm that your connections are exactly as described there?

Another potential issue - you mentioned that you are using a breadboard. I'd be concerned about this - usually we recommend you must have short cables (<8 inches) between your MSP-FET and the device to minimize the capacitance and noise on the lines - with a breadboard, I'd be concerned your lines would not be very clean, and I wonder if that could be related to your problem...

Do you have access to a TI target board?
