Are the MSP430FR6972 and the MSP430FR6922 binary compatible?

Table 4-1 shows that the pins involving HFXT and most LCD segments are different. I'm not aware of other differences.

Have a quick look into the datasheet - both processors do not have 100% identical pin functions:
