CCS/MSP430F5502: No USB FET was found

Part Number: MSP430F5502

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

I'm trying to debug a project in CCS v6 in Windows on an MSP430f5502. I'm using a pretty old MSP-FET430UIF Debug-Interface. I've updated my drivers, so when I plug in the device it is recognized on my Device Manager as MSP-FET430UIF - VCP (COM18) under Ports (photo attached). However, when I hit debug in CCS it tells me "MSP430: Error initializing emulator: No USB FET was found". I have tried installing MSP430Flasher and using it to update the firmware on the device after having read the information here and on other forums, but it also says "No USB FET was found" (photo attached). If it is a firmware problem, I'm surprised that CCS didn't prompt me to update the firmare on debugging as described in the above link. I've tried switching cables, using different USB ports, and restarting CCS to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hello Roshena,

It seems windows is recognizing the MSP-FET430UIF sot hat is a good sign. Just as a data point, can you tell me what version of Windows you are using?

Within CCS, can you do the following? Right-click your project and open "Build Settings". Your screen should show a pop up window similar to the one below. From here can you make sure that the Connection drop down menu is set to [Default]. If that doesn't work, click the Identify button to get CCS to scan for the FET.

  • Thanks for the response Jace! I'm using Windows 7 through Parallels for Mac. I checked and Ti MSP430 USB1 [Default] is selected. When I click Identify, the same error response happens "No USB FET was found". I've attached photos of both of those. I again double checked and my Device Manager does indeed show the MSP-FET430UIF - VCP (COM18). I'm surprised that CCS didn't automatically ask to update the firmware since I know the new firmware should show CDC instead of VCP, but it seems the problem is something else than just firmware or it would've auto asked to update.

  • Hello Roshena,

I'll have to check with our Tools team on this, but I think the issue might be the fact you are running CCS + Windows through VM SW (aka Parallels on Mac). I did find another E2E thread with a similar issue to yours. Can you review it and see if it applies to you? I think it will be dependent on your version of the MSP-FET430UIF (how old it is).

Another option is we now have CCS available for Mac natively if you prefer to work with no VM SW.

    Why?

What is the version of OS X?

BTW, F550X can easily flashed by factory preloaded USB BSL without any glue logic / hardware tools.

  • So when I turn off my VM, open CCS v6 in Mac, and try to debug there, it goes to the Configuring Debugger (may take a few minutes on first launch)... and hangs. I left it yesterday doing this for over 30 minutes, which doesn't seem normal. I will try updating the firmware through MSP430Flasher in OS X and see if that works.

**Udate: I get the same message in MSP430Flasher in Mac as in my Windows VM: No USB FET was found.

  • Solved! FET-Pro-430 LITE from Elprotronic on my VM was able to see the device and update the firmware. Then when I tried to debug in CCS it prompted me to upgrade my firmware. Thanks everyone!
