Hi Expert.

In mostly MSP430 example code I am seeing this line in starting of the main loop "WDTCTL = WDTPW | WDTHOLD;

Can you explain the reason behind this and if we exclude this statement then what could be the consequences?

By default, the watch dog timer is enabled.
A watchdog timer is basically a timer that counts to a certain limit, and when that limit is reached (when the timer overflows), it resets the MCU.

So, that line of code disables the watchdog timer. If you exclude it (and if you do not periodically reset the watchdog timer within your firmware), the watchdog timer will reset the MCU once it overflows.

Hi,

Thanks for your answer. Can you tell approx time before which we have to reset watchdog? or I mean to say that what is the duration for watchdog timeout.?
