MSP430F5244: I2C with a 1.8V supply

Dear e2e Support,

Considering our MSP430F5244 with a power supply at 1.8V, is it possible to use the I²C bus? (We only see a characterization of this communication bus for a 2.2Vmin)

If yes, what would be the limitations?

Regards,

  • Hello,

The characterization test data that is represented in the datasheet was only performed at 2.2V and 3V. Characteristics when operating below 2.2V cannot be guaranteed. Please keep in mind that if you are operating at 1.8V, there is also zero margin as 1.8V is the absolute minimum. If you can run the I2C at 2.2V, I recommend this. Also, you may want to look at the MSP430FR5229, which is a split rail device allowing 3V supply and dedicated 1.8V ports.
