Battery Charger

Hi

I am designing 300W battery charger for EV application .The topology i selected is Forward Converter.Following are my main queries

1.Does forward converter topology is equivalent to buck converter with isolation?

2.What is the formula to calculate ESR of output capacitor .Is it ripple voltage /ripple load current or ripple voltage /ripple lnductor current

3.As my control loop is digital ,how should i simulate and calculate PID parameter when loop switch from constant current to constant voltage

4.Are their any standard to specify maximum ripple in current and voltage for Li ion battery charging

5.Can a boost converter be used for Li ion charging,if yes can you explain that

  • Hi Mudit,

TI can only support question regarding its device part numbers. However I can give you some quick answers.

    1. the forward is equivalent to a buck with isolation
    2. the ESR is specified in the datasheet by the capaciator manufactuer.
    3. please check C2000 and TI power design seminar papers for control and digitla control theory
    4. Cant help with this
    5. Yes, please check TI.com for suitbale reference designs

  • Hi

Thanks for the reply. I am using MSP-EXP430G2 board for development of charger with boost topology. I am not able to find any application note which implement BOOST topology for li ion battery charger. Can you explain me how boost converter can be used to charge the Li ion battery. For control i am using MSP-EXP430G2 board.

  • Hi Mudit,

TI has a battery management group,

They should be able to provide you more details on battery charging options. Our team, HVP-HVC, supports high power, 500W plus, designs for consumer and industrial applications so we do not have any background in Li-ion charging.

    Regards

    Peter
