Hi,

I have recently set up and connected the msp gang. And having issues with it connecting via error #23.

Our prog. file is hex.

No external power source.

I have done the following from reading up on other forums, is it worth investigating more or returning back for a replacement?

1) Various voltage/reset/JTAG speed adjustments.

2) connected the cap and resistor across the Vcc and RST.

3) Shortened cable length.

Please advise.

Hello,

This error can have several causes.

What is the target device?
What programming connection are you using, 4 wire JTAG or SBW?
Can you share the programming connections/schematic?

This is the schematic drawing for the connection on our board.

The target device is a pressure board with an 8 pin JTAG.

Please advise.

This looks like a custom board with a custom 8 pin JTAG connector. Is that correct?

Have you ever successfully programmed this board via JTAG with any programmers?
Could you share the JTAG connections to the MSP430 for review? What Cap and pull up values did you use on the RST line?
Is VCC provided from the GANG or the board? Which JTAG pin is associated to the VCC pin on the header?

Figure 2-1 of the Hardware Tools user's guide shows the full JTAG circuit I'm trying to compare your hardware too. www.ti.com/.../slau278ae.pdf

Hi,

Yes.

Yes, we have tried the same connections without R1 and C1 to a MSP-FET single output emulator and it programs fine with no errors.

Vcc is provided from the gang

Hello Matthew,

R1 and C1 are required on the RST line, regardless of the programer used. They should stay.

It looks like there is an issue on wiring diagram you provided. If VCC should be provided from the MSP-GANG, then it should be connected to the VCC tool, not Vcc Target. In the configuration in the document above, VCC would need to be supplied from the target board.

Also, how many boards are you trying to power/program at once with the MSP-GANG? How much current will they pull?

I believe the MSP-GANG can provide ~50mA/ channel, but I would need to try and double check this as well if it's possible we're close.

Hi,

I have tried connecting to both ports Vcc Target and Vcc Tool - still not working.

Just 1 for now to see if it works, it's odd that it works with the single MSP-FET emulator but not with the gang, I believe the pin outs are the same. I am unsure on the current value, I'll see if I can get an update on this, but I do know that there is a max of 100mA current.

Hey Matt,

Yes, the MSP-GANG and MSP-FET should have the same connections. So if MSP-FET is working, I would also expect the MSP-GANG to work.

Can you post a screen shot of the error?
Also, what is your cable length? less than 8 inches is recommended.

I have attached the file for the error code. Also is that 8 inches from the ribbon cable provided with the kit or from the outlet port on the msp gang.msp-gang error codes.docx

Hello Mathew,

Thank you for the additional information. MSP-GANG is stating that it's not seeing the target device. It's really not clear why the MSP-FET would program and the MSP-GANG with the same connections on the same board would not.

We should confirm these steps to determine why:

Confirm the target device is a MSP430F149?
Re-Confrim that the JTAG VCC is connected to JTAG TOOL, not JTAG Target as shown in your above drawing.
1. Can you measure the board VCC when MSP-GANG is connected? It should be 3.3V.
Can you confirm that you are connected to channel 1 of the MSP-GANG? maybe try a different channel, possibly channel 2 or 3?
Can you watch the TCK and TDI lines to confirm you see DATA from the MSP-GANG while trying to program?
