BOOSTXL-DRV8305EVM: Instaspin-FOC Evaluation GUI

Part Number: BOOSTXL-DRV8305EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LAUNCHXL-F28027F, MOTORWARE, DRV8305, MCF8316A

I purchased a BOOSTXL-DRV8305EVM with LAUNCHXL-F28027F

I have a motor that I want to spin with a GUI like what is shown in this video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrRqN_6aobY

Are there any sample programs that I can download and get my motor spinning quickly?

  • Hello Nathan,

Thanks for your question and for posting to the MD forum.

You can find example code for this EVM by downloading the MotorWare software package found here: https://www.ti.com/tool/MOTORWARE

The GUI used in the video can be downloaded here: https://www.ti.com/tool/INSTASPINUNIVERSALGUI

You can follow the video series from part one for step by step instructions on how to get your motor running: www.youtube.com/watch

Feel free to let me know if you have any questions!

    Best,

    Isaac

  • Hello Isaac,

Thank you for your response, I will work on the exercises in Motorware and hopefully will get things working shortly.

You can follow the video series from part one for step by step instructions on how to get your motor running: www.youtube.com/watch

This is not really a step-by-step instruction since it does not cover any of the steps that have to do with compiling and flashing code to the board.

I chose this platform because I was expecting to be able to plug this in and start spinning a rotor in ~10 minutes (https://training.ti.com/sensorless-foc-less-10-minutes). Does the default firmware loaded on the evaluation kit allow me to get started quickly, or do I have to go through a bunch of installations and learn how to use CCS and upload new firmware just to see it spin my motor?

I do not have a background in electrical engineering, so this seems like a lot of work to me when it would have been entirely possible to have a program pre-loaded that would let me do some basic tests right away.

  • Hello Nathan,

The video you linked is for our newer devices MCF8316A, which is different from the DRV8305 you are trying to use at the moment. The device you are currently using is an older device that unfortunately was not set up to plug and play as easily as we would have hoped , so the setup and flashing the code is a little bit more tedious of a process than I wish it were to get up and running. We have streamlined operation for our newer products so that they are easier for customers to start evaluating with them right away.

With that being said, we do have other devices that are much simpler to run and I may be able to recommend another if I had more information. If this is not an option I can do my best to provide the steps and assistance to help you get this running. Let me know what I can do to help and we do appreciate the patience here. Thanks!

    Best,

    Isaac
