Texas Instruments’ DRV831x and MCx831x portfolios of Brushless-DC motor drivers integrates three ½ bridge MOSFETs and a variety of system components, such as a configurable buck regulator, 3.3V LDO, active demagnetization, integrated 3x current sense amplifiers, and highly-configurable trapezoidal or Field-oriented control. These motor drivers significantly minimize the form factor of a PCB, but comes with a trade-off of having larger thermal losses due to power dissipation of all these features. Many applications require system considerations that affect the junction temperature of the IC, including ambient temperature, system specifications, and PCB size.

The BLDC Integrated MOSFET Thermal Calculator is an excel-based tool to help calculate estimated power losses and junction temperature of the DRV831x device depending on PCB configuration, ambient temperature, and the device features used. This calculator serves as a good resource on how to estimate the thermal performance of the device before evaluation.
The calculator is updated quarterly for new MCx831x and DRV831x devices.
