DRV8906-Q1: Short behavior

Part Number: DRV8906-Q1

Hi Team,

I got the following question from a customer:

What happens exactly in the case of a resistive short circuit between two outputs when one output is on low and the other on high?
Is the current limited within the time t_oc only by the internal drain resistances of 2 x 0.55Ohm?

Thanks and regards

David

  • Hey David,

I believe you are correct, within the tOCP time (1us to 60us selectable) the chip won't actively be doing anything to limit the current, though I'm seeing 0.75Ω RDS(ON).

You also might find the Functional Safety document interesting, specifically Table 4-4. Pin FMA for Device Pins Short-Circuited to Adjacent Pin:  DRV8906-Q1 Functional Safety FIT Rate, FMD and Pin FMA.  It says that when two outputs short together such as OUT5 to OUT1 that Load drive capability is lost. This document can be found under Technical documentation on the driver page.

    Regards,

    Jacob
