DRV8899-Q1EVM: GUI Installation problem

Part Number: DRV8899-Q1EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F2617, MSP-FET

Hello team,

please help us to resolve the software installation problem.

When trying to install the GUI_Composer-6.2.0.1-Setup installer we're getting an error showed on screenshot below:

Without the software we are not able to evaluate the device.

What can be the reason for this error, and how to avoid this?

Thank you for your support.

  • Hello Slava,

I assume you were trying to install the GUI in a Windows computer. Is this correct? I'm not sure why you were attempting to install GUI_Composer-6.2.0.1. What is the reason? We have an available GUI app for use with the DRV8899-Q1EVM. The EVM can be used with either the cloud based GUI or with an installed desktop app. The cloud link is shown in the below screen capture from the EVM web page, https://www.ti.com/tool/DRV8899-Q1EVM. The cloud GUI will require a browser extension and TI Cloud Agent application to be installed during the first attempt - one time only. Chrome browser is recommended. You may have to login to dev.ti.com/gallery using myTI credentials.

The DRV88x9-Q1/ver/1.0.0/ GUI installer is included in the SLVC796 zip file or can be downloaded from https://dev.ti.com/gallery/dl/5063756/DRV88x9-Q1/ver/1.0.0?platform=win, prior to clicking on this link be sure to login to dev.ti.com/gallery using myTI credentials. The downloaded installer must be unzipped first before executing the setup. .

  • Hello Murugavel,

We've tryed to install the software from a product web-page you're provided above.

The thing is that GUI composer is a part of instalation, and during it's installation error occurs.

The cloud based evaluation model isn’t able to connect to the board even after installing all the required softwares the cloud model asked for.

So please assist us on what the sources of problem we need to check and how we can resolve this problem.

    Thank you.

  • Hello Slava,

"The thing is that GUI composer is a part of installation, and during it's installation error occurs.". Yes this is the GC Runtime which is important for the GUI operation. Some firewall settings are known to block this installation. The correct version of the Runtime installer for this GUI can be downloaded from https://software-dl.ti.com/ccs/non-esd/gui_composer/runtime/gcruntime-7.2.0-windows-installer.exe. Download this installer and point to it when prompted during the GUI app installation instead of installing the Runtime from the web.

If you haven't already, install the latest USB drivers for the FTDI USB device on the EVM from https://ftdichip.com/drivers/d2xx-drivers/. After installing the drivers and connecting the EVM to the computer you should see a blinking LED on the EVM. In the GUI Window you can make sure correct COM port is selected using the "Options > Serial Port" menu. You'll have a COMx port associated with FTDI. The baud rate for this GUI is 9600.

I hope this fixes your issues.

    Regards, Murugavel

  • Hi Murugavel,

Thanks for sending the runtime installer , the one you sent installed successfully but the hardware seems to be connected for only a second or so and then gets disconnected with the error “Failed to connect to device MSP430F2617.”

The hardware has a blinking led, and I’ve made sure that the correct COM port and baud rate is selected.

Please do help out with this situation.

  • Hi Slava,

Thanks for the update. It looks like the runtime is working but the handshake between the GUI and the EVM is not successful because of serial communication mismatch. Can you please confirm the GUI "Help > About" matches with the below screen image?

And the serial resembles the below with an COMx (FTDI) as well as the EVM you are using has label "DRV8899-Q1EVM". Do you have a second EVM or only one EVM with you?. Did you reboot your computer after these installations. While this step may be not required most of the time it may help in certain scenario.

Do you happen to have an MSP-FET JTAG debugger with you?

I have an DRV8899-Q1EVM with me and verified it connects and works as expected with this specific GUI.

    Regards, Murugavel

  • Hello Murugavel,

    here is the update:

    • My GUI composer Runtime version is v7.2.0.0, except that all other versions marked by you are same.
    • The serial port configuration is the same as mentioned by you also the name of the device is DRV8899-Q1EVM.
    • I only have 1 EVM with me and I did reboot my laptop after installation.
    • I also don’t have an MSP-FET JTAG debugger with me

Since this topic is urgent and is for very important, I'd like to ask you to have a Webex with customer.

Please let me know your availability time to have a customer call. You can find my contact data internally.

    Thank you in advance.

  • Hello Slava,

Could you please install Runtime using this installer? https://software-dl.ti.com/ccs/non-esd/gui_composer/runtime/gcruntime-7.4.2-windows-installer.exe.
