On the forum page titled:

[FAQ] Motor Studio GUI - EVM Firmware Compatibility

It describes the process for upgrading the MCF8316A Evaluation Module to the latest firmware:

(MCxGUI_Comm_Bridge_MSP430FR2355_v0.0.9.out - Works with the new Motor Studio GUI)

It shows how to connect the Spy-Bi-Wire (SBW) 2-wire JTAG interface, using an MSP-EXP430FR2355 as a programmer.

My question is, would it be possible to flash the MCF8316A Evaluation Module, using an MSP-EXP430G2553 as a programmer???

Or is the older MSP-EXP430G2553 not compatible for flashing the motor driver module??

Hi David,

So long as a LaunchPad has an eZ-FET Debug Probe on it can be used to program the EVM with the latest firmware.

I was not able to find a launch pad called the MSP-EXP430G2553 but I was able to find a LaunchPad called the MSP-EXP430G2ET if this LaunchPad is the same as the one you are wanting to use then it can be used to flash the EVM with the latest firmware since it has an eZ-FET Debug Probe.

Turns out I have the EXP430G2 and not the EXP430G2ET. So It can not be done, because its an eZ430 device and not an eZ-FET.

Hi David,

Unfortunately, you are correct that since the MSP-EXP430G2 LaunchPad uses the eZ430 instead of the eZ-FET Debug Probe it cannot be used to flash the firmware onto the MCF8316AEVM.

You will have to use another LaunchPad that does have the eZ-FET Debug Probe. If you need to get one please consult the MSP430 LaunchPad Development Kits for MSP430 LaunchPads that include an onboard eZ-FET Debug Probe.
