DRV8462EVM: SPI isolation needed?

Hello,

I am a student and returning to design for motor controllers and implementing the DRV8462. It is from my understanding that this chip still requires isolation between the controller and the driver SPI pins, yes? Or can you directly put the pins of the MCU to the DRV8462 without the risk of high currents destroying the MCU/GPIO/SPI pins?

Hello Silas,

A microcontroller can directly drive the SPI pins of the DRV8462 without any issues. This is how the TI DRV8462EVM, https://www.ti.com/tool/DRV8462EVM is designed to work. The EVM hardware files with Altium project and schematic can be downloaded from https://www.ti.com/lit/zip/slor128. There is a separate logic power supply input pin VCC provided in the device to power the internal logic blocks. This VCC voltage also defines the SDO output voltage level. For 3.3 V MCU interface the VCC should be powered from 3.3 V usually the same rail as the MCU.

Thanks a lot! I was worried about back EMF or something creeping over to the pins due to a similar discussion seen with the L298. This clarifies a lot and helps with my design!
