DRV8462: DRV8462 Isolation

Hi there,

I'm developing a stepper driver with DRV8462DDWR Driver IC. In this regard I want isolation between motor supply and control signals including SPI Interface of Driver IC.

I have concern regarding the isolation between the GND pin & the PGNDA or PGNDB pins of the driver as no information is given regarding the isolation between these pins in its datasheet.

So please provide the appropriate information regarding same.

Hi Vishesh,

The GND pin and the PGNDA or PGNDB pins of the driver are not electrically isolated internally. We suggest the GND and PGNDx should be connected externally together for proper operation of the device.

Hi Murugavel,

Thanks for your quick response.

Actually I'll be using around 20 stepper motors in my system which will be consuming around 75 Watt each so I'm very concerned about the noise coupling between motor control section(as it will working on SPI & PWM) and the motor supply section.

Can you please suggest any other TI stepper driver which provides isolation between control block and motor supply section with above mentioned power requirements or it will be very helpful if you can suggest any other alternative to get rid of the noise coupling which I discussed above.

Hi Vishesh,

We do not have such stepper drivers that have complete electrical isolation between control block and motor supply sections. It is common practice to provide external isolation with control signals for stepper drivers to work in harsh noisy environments such as industrial applications. There are a lot of example circuits available in the public forum that you can look up on the internet.

Hi Murugavel, thanks for your support, I am aware of external digital isolation but that will complicate the circuit and will require more pcb space that is why I was looking for internal isolation. Well I'll go through the provided references. Thanks for resolving my doubts.
