CCS/DRV8876EVM: Flash and debug with ez430-f2013 ?

Following p. 3 of DRV8876EVM_slvubg7b.pdf, we provided external power and connected ez430-f2013 as recommended to J6 (I think).

(And we were able to import and build the DRV887xEVM_FW_1p3 project file using CCS9.1.0 as you can see from attached screenshot)

But when we try to connect, get the highlighted error. Also with E2E search, https://e2e.ti.com/support/microcontrollers/msp430/f/166/t/863170 claims ez430-f2013 cannot flash MSP430FR2100.

So then why is ez430-f2013 recommended in DRV8876EVM_slvubg7b.pdf? Are we connecting something wrong (especially J6)?

We can use Launchpad or MSP-FET if better. Though ez430-f2013 connector is convenient to DRV8876EVM J6 connector.

What is the best method to connect CCS to the MSP430FR2100 on the DRV8876EVM?

Hi Joe,

The user guide should not state the EVM can be programmed with the ez430 tool. The change to remove that statement has been requested and I expect it to take a couple of business days for the guide to update.

I know the MSP-EXP430FR5949 launchpad can program the EVM through the EVM’s J6 connector by removing U1 and adding a 4 pin angled male header to J21 soldered from pin V+ to GND.

You can order the MSP-EXP430FR5949, and the 4 pin angled male header so programming can occur.

- It is 50 pin. Cheaper than 4 pin option. You can purchase it and cut it to 4 pins.

Thanks for the update. Funny, I've got every Launchpad except MSP-EXP430FR5969 (Assume that's a typo above? Would MSP-EXP430FR5739 or MSP-EXP430FR6989 work?). Will order along with Digikey part.

Do you have a picture of the setup you could post?

Would make me feel better connecting the 4 wires.

5969 launchpad it is (yes, it was a typo). I do not have a picture right now.

Someone from the EP team can confirm if you can use those launchpads.

I test FR6989 LaunchPad to download code into FR2111. It works.

This is what you need, ez430-f2013 can't download code into FR2111.

Quick update, we came up with 2 alternatives offline. Did not prefer the first that requires depopulating the MSP430FR5949 on the MSP-EXP430FR5949,

Mechanically I don’t see a robust, easy way to do this on DRV8876EVM since it has the ez430-f2013-like 4-pin micro-connector.

Came up with attached solution which is even more fragile but at least does not require depop.

Mechanical engineering challenge here with that J21-style connector. But nice with SBW we only need 2 signal pins (besides power and ground). Red clip is RST and white clip is TST.
