DRV8847: Back EMF protection

Part Number: DRV8847

I am implementing the DRV8847 to drive two relay coils with switching polarity (able to drive high side or low side of coil).  My question is if it would be better for back EMF protection to put a TVS diode on VM or if it would be better to put one on each output.

  • Hi Katrina,

The simpler solution to protect against high voltage spikes due to back EMF is to place the TVS diode on the VM pin. This way the excess energy is absorbed by the TVS diode at the VM pin which is going to protect the rest of the circuit.
