UCC28880: What is the known SOA issue

Guru 19575 points
Part Number: UCC28880
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28881

UCC28880's TI web is described SOA issue and UCC28881 was resolved.

Please let me know about derailed information for SOA issue.

Best regards,

Satoshi

  • Hello,

Could you send me the link that shows your snippet of where teh UCC28880 has a known issue and it was resolved in the UCC28881?

    1. I am not aware of the UCC28881 having SOA issues that have been resolved.

    2. The UCC28880's ILimit specification is close to the devices Ids max rating.  As long the Ids current is kept below the max there should be no issues.

    > We have recommended for new designs for customers to use the UCC28881 because it is easier to design with and keep the Ids below it's maximum current rating.  This is because the ILimit is further away from the Ids maximum rating.

  • HI Mike

Please refer the below UCC28880 link.

    https://www.ti.com/product/UCC28880

My customer's request Ids spec is enough to match UCC28880.

But I wondering to recommend UCC28880 because described SOA issue and unclear detailed SOA information.

    Best regards,

    Satoshi

  • Hello,

If the design using the UCC28880 has an Ids that exceeds the absolute maximum the FET could fail due to SOA.

If the customers design does not exceed the absolute maximum for Ids the design will not fail.

Customer found it easier to design with the UCC28881 which has a lower Rdson and a higher rated internal FET.  That is why we are recommending it for future designs and not recommending the UCC28880.

Please note I would advise your customer to test there design with input/output voltage and load transients just to make sure the Ids max is not exceeded on there UCC28880 design.

I have notified the TI literature team to reword what is presented on the  TI website to reflect this information.

    Regards,

    Mike

  • Hi Mike

    Thank you for reply,

I modified about the reason for described "SOA issue" below, is my understanding correct?

・We feel that "SOA issue" mean the UCC28880 have any bug or trouble, but actually UCC28880 have not these problem.

・Just simply, UCC28881 is recommended more than UCC28880 because low Rdson and high Ids rating.

    Best regards,

    Satoshi

  • Any update on this?

  • Hello,

As long as the IDS maximum current is not above the maximum rating of the UCC28880 the device will not fail.

If the IDS is above the max rating the UCC28880 could fail immediately or a latent failure in the future.

The ILimit of the UCC28880 is close to the IDS maximum rating.  Customers have found it easier designing with the UCC28881 which has a more robust FET and ILimit is further away from the IDS max rating.

We are recommending customers use the UCC28881 instead.  If your customer is worried that his UCC28880 is exceeding the maximum IDS rating they can move to the UCC28881.  I believe the devices are the same cost.
