BQ78350-R1: SMBD, SMBC Line Voltage in case of LowSideFET Protection being open.

Part Number: BQ78350-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ78350

In a potential design with BQ78350 and BQ769x0 both ICs share the Battery GND. If the Lowside FET Protection of the Battery triggers and opens the FETs the Application Device is disconnected from the Battery and the complete Application Design Voltage will rise to BAT+. Now this is not problematic execpt for the SBMD and SMBC lines which connect the Application to the Battery Pack.

They will be pulled up to 3V3 Application Device Side which is BAT+ Voltage since the Lowside is disconnected. Thats not ok, since the SMBC/SMBD lines only allow Voltages up to 5V vs BAT-/VSS of BQ78350. If pullups connected to REGOUT instead of on the Application Device, the SMBC/SMBD lines are below 0V in respect to the Application GND, which is also not possible. How can this issue be resolved?

The datasheet states to use High-side protection if communication is needed all the time, but i don't need communication if the FETs are open. I just don't want the host or the BQ to be fried Slight smile

Thanks!
