MRI compatible DC-DC converter EVM board

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS546D24, TPS53355, TPS543C20A

Hi,

I am looking for a buck converter, that can step down an input voltage to 5V output, current 1A min. The converter will be inside an MRI room, but outside the 5G line, but I am still looking for an air core inductor based design, just to be avoid any saturation and magnetic pull on the ferrite core based designs.

I have across the recommended, TPS546D24AEVM-2PH, that has pretty low inductances and could be supported with air core inductors, but it seems to be an overkill for our current application. Are there any other EVM boards/ IC that are MRI compatible and use air core inductors?

Thank you for your suggestions!

Best,

Jas

  • Hi Jas,

Could you please elaborate regarding the system requirements? For example, what input voltage range needs to be supported? Are there any limitations regarding switching frequency?

Also, I highly recommend using Webench as a starting point: https://webench.ti.com/power-designer/switching-regulator

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

  • Hi Alec,

Thank you for your suggestion. The webench has definitely been useful.

    As for the parameters,

Input voltage range is good as long as it includes 12V or 24V

Switching frequency - we will be placing this supply away from the MRI machine and shielding it, but would ideally like to avoid anything in the 10+MHz range

    Thank you,

    Jas

  • Hi Jas,

Thanks for the clarification! I understand that your application needs to avoid magnetic core inductors. As you mentioned, you can design the TPS546D24 with particularly low inductance. However, that device will support up to 16V at the input, so the 24V input will not be supported by that device.

Are there any air core inductors that have been pre-selected or any size constraints? Please keep in mind that the design will likely have reduced efficiency due to the higher series resistance of an air core inductor.  Also are you able to use a controller (non-integrated power FETs) as opposed to a converter (integrated power FETs)? We have some controllers that support a wider input voltage range and may provide a broader selection.

I may recommend the TPS546D24, TPS543C20A, and the TPS53355. Each of these products offer different advantages in terms of performance, but these being higher current parts can accommodate a low inductance design. These products are also best suited for a 12V rail.
