LM25119: We need to control both channels in LM25119 from EN2 or we need alternate part number which is having EN1 and EN2 to control both channels (dual or interleaved both are ok)(Output should support 3.3V/40A)

Part Number: LM25119
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5143-Q1, TPS53647

Dear sir,

As you know in LM25119,we have only one enable option in channel 2 that is EN2.

Currently we are using it in interleave mode,can we control channel1 and channel2 by EN2?

Or is there any other synchronous buck controller in TI which supports below our requirements,

1.Input voltage=10-14V and our nominal voltage is 12V

2.Output 3.3V at 40A.

3.We need to control both channels by Enable option(Like buck controller which has both E1 and E2 to control both channels)

Kindly give us the solution.

Thank you your team for previous quick reply support regarding LM25119 simulation support.

We appreciate TI prompt and quick replies.

Thank you

  • Hi TI team,

    Good morning.

    We are waiting for your reply.

    Kindly reply we need to update to our customer and look for alternative controller and kindly support us.

    Thank you,

    Girish K

  • Hi Girish,

    EN2 only can control rail 2. I captured the description from datasheet as below.

    Otherwise, if you would like to have other suggested solutions for this application. Please allow me to take some time to ask my team for suggestion.

  • Hi Derrick,

    Good morning.

    Thank you very much for your reply.

    We found one controller LM5143-Q which has E1 and E2 to control both channels.

    We tried to simulate it in webench but we can't  set output current more than 35.2A even though it mentions maximum amps as 40A.

    We can only generate schematic and get some data in excel and we couldn't simulate and import pspice files to simulate in TI pspice.

    Kindly let us know about LM5143-Q  maximum amps,its reference design and simulation files to simulate in TI pspice.

    Kindly support us.

    We wish to go for industrial grade controller and its our priority also but automotive controller are also ok.

    Kindly support us with controller which has 40 to 50A output current capacity at 3.3V,with E1and E2 enable options,with good efficiency.

    We are waiting for your reply.

    Thank you very much for your support.

  • Hi Caliber,

    You can refer to Shunt Current Sensing section of LM5143-Q. The maximum current is dependent on shunt resistor or DCR value.

    Except you wish the solution is industrial grade, is there any specific demands?

  • Hi Derrick,

    Good afternoon

    Thank you for your reply and quick response.

    We are looking for better efficiency and good thermal management also its should be compact.

    If you had any other better controllers,kindly inform us.

    Do you recommend LM5143-Q or any other options available(With both channels controller options like E1,E2 and with 3.3v/40A at output)?

    Kindly suggest.

    Thank you

  • Hi Caliber,

    Would like to clarify the requirement with you.

    VIN = 10V to 14V,

    VOUT1 = 3.3V, IOUT1=40A,

    VOUT2 = 3.3V, IOUT2=40A as well?

    Does it need to support any specific protocol, like PMBus?

    If it's possible, may I know what is the application? What kind of product, customer, etc...

    BR

    Derrick

  • Dear Derrick,

    Good evening.

    Thank you for your reply.

    Our application doesn't need to support any specific protocol.

     We need LM5143-Q1 in interleave mode with below requirement,

    VIN = 10V to 14V,

    VOUT = 3.3V, IOUT=40A.

    According to your previous suggestion"You can refer to Shunt Current Sensing section of LM5143-Q. The maximum current is dependent on shunt resistor or DCR value" we tried in webench with different values of sensing resistor and inductor values as below,

    1St set of values:

    L1 and L2=820nH,DCR=1.7mOhm

    Rsense=1.5mOhm

    Output we can set is maximum 37A.If we give 37.2A also the error message displays "Design update failed"

    2nd set of values:

    L1 and L2=820nH,DCR=1.08mOhm

    Rsense=2mOhm

    Output we can set is maximum 37A.If we give 37.2A also the error message displays "Design update failed"

    So webench design ready for 37A but why we couldn't we are not able simulate further 3A(40A is our requirement).

    Kindly suggest us the inductor value,sensing resistor value by simulating in your application.

    Are we missing any other changes to be made,Kindly suggest us the solution.

    Thank you

  • Hi Caliber,

    Seems you just need one output with 2-phase interleave operation. Not the two independent rails, right?

    Then, may I know why do you require two enable control pins? I think one enable control pin should be OK.

    Cause your input voltage range is 10V to 14V, we won't suggest you using the LM5143-Q1 which is a wide input range application.

  • Dear Derrick,

    Good evening.

    Seems you just need one output with 2-phase interleave operation. Not the two independent rails, right?

    Yes you are right.

    Then, may I know why do you require two enable control pins? I think one enable control pin should be OK.

    Before we were using LM25119 which has only one Enable pin EN2 with that you said we can't control output because even if shut down

    one channel other channel will be giving output right?

    EN2 only can control rail 2. I captured the description from datasheet as below.

    Otherwise, if you would like to have other suggested solutions for this application. Please allow me to take some time to ask my team for suggestion.

    So in LM25119 also we were trying with interleave operation and needed to control output by turning off the channels which was believed not possible with EN2.

    So as a next step we gone to LM5143-Q1 which has E1 and E2 to control both channels and can control output.

    Having E1 and E2 to control both channels and output was our requirement.

    Cause your input voltage range is 10V to 14V, we won't suggest you using the LM5143-Q1 which is a wide input range application.

    So please guide us which we can go after LM25119( can we control output with E2 alone) or shell we go for LM5143-Q.

    Is there any other buck controller as per our requirements.

    kindly suggest.

    Thank you,

    Girish k

  • Hi Caliber,

    Then I know what exactly you require.

    VIN = 10V - 14V, Vout=3.3V, Iout=40A (2-phase interleave)

    Industrial grade is better to have.

    No specific protocol or other features.

    I will check with my team for advice. Would let you know once I have the feedback.

  • Dear Derrick,

    Good morning.

    Thank you  very much for your support and reply.

    We are waiting for your reply.

    Thank you

    Girish K

  • Hi Caliber,
    We would suggest you using TPS53647. It's a 4-phase controller with pinstrap or NVM configured. You can use 2-phase operation only and set different configuration as needed.

  • Caliber,

    If you don't have any other questions, I will close this thread. Thanks.

  • Dear Derrick,

    Good afternoon.

    Thank you for your reply.

    TPS53647 output value is only 0.5 to 2.5V  but our requirement is 3.3V/40.

    Kindly check and suggest.

    Thank you

  • Hi Caliber,

    You can use a voltage divider to set higher voltage. For example, to set VID=1.65V and divided ratio is 1/2, then output voltage can be 3.3V.
