Yes, if removing this 5.1k, the S2B cannot guarantee for this system.

Would it be possible to provide a little more explanation for what the 5.1k resistor is doing to protect the system in a short to battery or ESD strike situation? The datasheet calls it a discharge resistor, but I am not sure how it is used to protect the device. Any insight you can provide would be greatly apprecaited!
