LM1084: Recommend LDO circuit to prevent Input voltage directly supply to output voltage if part malfunction?

Part Number: LM1084

Dear Sir / Madam,

We planning to use this part :LM1084IT-3.3/NOPB in our circuit design for

Vin=12V, Vout = 3.3V, iout =3A

Can I know if the regulator malfunction, does it direct supply input voltage to regulator output voltage?

Any recommend circuit to prevent Input voltage directly supply to output voltage if part malfunction?

best regards,
kpk

  • Hi Keng,

    If the input is passed to the output, the LDO is not regulating and is likely damaged. If there is a reason to believe that the LDO might be damaged during normal operation, you can put a Zener diode at the output of the LDO that is greater than the set output voltage (3.3V) but lower than the supply (12V). Of course the better approach is to ensure that the LDO does not get damaged in the first place.

    Regards,

    Nick
