Hi,

I am designing a DC-DC to convert a +28V to +36V unregulated voltage bus to +5V at 1.5A maximum current.

The TPS7H4010-SEP would be a great fit except for its recommended maximum input voltage of 32V.

Does TI have any reference designs for connecting a TPS7H4010-SEP to a 36V bus?
Are there other bucking regulators that I should consider for this design?

Hey Doug,

36 V is above any of our space grade integrated buck regulators.
From that point on we would suggest a more discrete converter with our controller family like the TPS7H5007-SEP.

Hi Daniel,

The TPS7H500x-SEP family has a supply voltage limit of 14V. Are there other controller IC's that I should consider and does TI have application notes for using them in a buck converter architecture?

Hey Doug,

While the controller has a supply input of 14 V, since its not in the way of the high power path, you can simply bring the input down with an LDO, such as the LM117QML-SP.

Our plastic space options for LDOs only go to 20 Vs at the moment.

The TPS7H500X-SEP family is regularly used to support isolated topologies from a 22-36 V input bus with the use of some sort of intermediate rail.

Hi Daniel,

Using an external LDO to bring down the supply voltage makes sense to me. Thank you for that information.

How about design notes, reference designs or SPICE reference designs for using a TPS7H500x-SEP in a buck regulator configuration. Are any of those available?

Hi Daniel,

What is the timeline to release the TPS7H5007 to production?

I will be looking to build 20 to 25 prototype boards over the next few months and may need up to 100 IC's for unit production in Q4-2022 or Q1-2023.
