TPS659037: Internal oscillator setting(OSC16M_CFG)

Part Number: TPS659037

Hi team,

My customer will use TPS6590379 and he considers to use 32kHz internal oscillator of the PMIC. Its register map states that OSC16M_CFG is type: "R" and Reset state: "X"

  1. How can we enable 32kHz internal oscillator whereas OSC16M_CFG is R only?
  2. What is default state of OSC16M_CFG?
  3. Is it okay to use 16MHz crystal instead of 16.384MHz's one?

Best regards,

Shota Mago

  • Shota,

Can you tell me the full device name and/or the OTP version?

    Regards,

    Alex

  • Hi Alex,

    Full part number is TPS6590379ZWSR.

    Best regards,

    Shota Mago

  • Thank you Shota. I will look into this tomorrow and get back to you by Thursday.

    Regards,

    Alex

  • Hi Shota,

How can we enable 32kHz internal oscillator whereas OSC16M_CFG is R only?

The OSC16M_CFG bit is automatically set by the OTP configuration so there is no way to change it.

What is default state of OSC16M_CFG?

The default state for this device has that bit set to 0 meaning the device is expecting to see an external 16.384MHz crystal oscillator.

Is it okay to use 16MHz crystal instead of 16.384MHz's one?

We do not recommend using a 16MHz crystal. Please use the recommended 16.384MHz crystal oscillator as various other internal clocks are built off of this frequency.

    Regards,

    Alex

  • Hi Alex,

Thanks for your reply. I understood that OSC16M_CFG is automatically set to 0 by OTP and there is no way to change it.

Just for confirmation, is 32kHz clock available from CLK32KGO without additional setting ? Because the datasheet states "Providing the 16-MHz crystal input to the device allows the output of a stable and accurate 32-kHz clock to be used by the applications processor. The crystal input is divided down by 500 internally to produce the 32-kHz output clock" in page 95.

    Best regards,

  • Shota,

    Yes that is correct.

    Regards,
    Alex

  • Hi Alex,

    Thanks for confirmation.

OSC16M_CFG of both current available TPS6590378 and TPS6590379 are set to "0" and it's not changeable.

Why does the datasheet still show "The 16-MHz crystal is not required for operation of the TPS659037 device. The OSC16M_CFG OTP bit can be set to disable the 16MHz crystal completely, and enable one of the following two alternative options for system clock generation" in page85?

My customer was confused by this expression and he thought TPS6590379 has option to operate the device w/o external oscillator.
