LM7480-Q1: TVS selection for 24-V battery systems

Part Number: LM7480-Q1

For the TVS selection for 24-V battery systems, the datasheet page 34 says the breakdown voltage of the TVS+ should be higher than 48-V jump start voltage, how did the 48-V requirement come from? All 24-V battery power automotive system should be higher than this voltage?

  • Hi Zhirong,

The breakdown voltage of the TVS+ should be higher than 48-V jump start voltage, less than the absolute maximum ratings of anode and enable pin of LM7480x-Q1 (70 V) and should withstand 65-V suppressed load dump.

    • In a 24V battery system, there could be a possibility of 48V jump start voltage. Operating a TVS in its Breakdown/Clamp region is not recommended and since jump start is like a DC condition, the  TVS on the positive side is recommended to have its breakdown voltage greater than 48V.
    • The clamping voltage of the TVS+ during all the transients that can occur in the system should be less than the Absolute Maximum rating of the device which is 70V.

Hope I have answered your question.
