I think the schematic is fine for operation of 12V input, 9.6V output, 280mA LED current.

I do not think this will be a problem. Since the target current is quite small, this will lead to a large inductor by calculation compared with the value in datasheet typical application. Normally large inductor will get smaller ripple current and thus lower inductor loss. If this is not a concern, smaller inductor can also be chosen.
