TPS25810-Q1: 36V short to VBATT protection/isolation

Part Number: TPS25810-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS25830A-Q1, TPD4S311A, TPD6S300A, TPD2S703-Q1

Hi

We would like to implement automotive type-c solution with TPS2580-Q1 how we add external protection IC or discrete parts for ISO 16750-2 "36V short to VBATT protection/isolation"?

Regards,

Vincent

  • Hi Vincent,

We seems to not have such high protection device, let me double confirm with Leanne, and give some feedback to you today, thank you.

    Best Regards,

  • Hi Vincent,

What voltage is primary power source? In Automotive applications this is typically 12V -16V. In this case, Short to VBATT protection requires up to 18V OVP. You can consider TPS25830A-Q1 to implement Automotive Type C solution with Short-to-VBATT and IEC 61000-4-2 ESD protection. TPS25830A-Q1 is next gen of TPS25810-Q1, integrating with robust protection and Buck converter in one-chip.

What's your application and which pins of Type C connector you want to have protection on?

If including CC1,CC2 pins, we have discrete protection part, like TPD6S300A AND TPD4S311A. They support CC1,CC2,SBU1,SBU2 or CC1,CC2,DP,DM Short-to-VBUS 24V tolerant OVP and IEC ESD protection. These two parts are not Automotive grade.

If not including CC1,CC2, TPD2S703-Q1 is protector for Short-to-VBAT and IEC ESD protection on DP,DM.

  • Hi Leanne

Our target is USB 3.0 type-C (without PD) implement with 24V automotive battery. Follow the ISO 16750-2 requirement, the shot to battery test will be performed up to 36V.

The TPS25830A-Q1 support short-to-battery protection on VBUS, CC1, CC2, DM_IN and DP_IN pins but only up to 18-V tolerance not meet our requirement. Therefore, we need to consult with TI's expert if any feasible discrete parts could meet our requirement?

    Regards,

    Vincent

  • Hi Vincent,

Thanks for the info about your application. Understand this is a 24V automotive battery.

I have a roadmap device to support this application on 24V battery. Could you please provide me the email address or your company? TI Field resource will contact you with introduction to pre-production part.

  • Hi Leanne

My TI FAE contact window is Eddie Chou. I also consult with him (off-line) for the new part released on coming Q3,

However,  we want to check if any possibility to design with discrete (protection) parts?

    Regards,

    Vincent

  • Hi Vincent,

Our new device will be sampling in 1Q24.I sent out introduction of the new device to Eddie Chou. He might share with you later.
