BQ26500: Empty battery charging

Part Number: BQ26500

Hi All,

I have a question about BQ26500.

If the battery is empty, the voltage will not rise when using the BQ26500.
Do you know the reason for this? Is it the current limit function?

Also, I would like to reduce the current consumption of the BQ26500. Is there a low consumption mode?

Best Regards,
Ishiwata

  • Hello Ishiwata-san,

Pre-charge must be at low current. Until approx 2.8V current should be limited.

The following power modes are available

    Automatic Low-Power Operating Modes −

    Active: < 100 µA

    Sleep: < 2.5 µA

    Ship: < 1.7 µA

    Hibernate: < 1.5 µA

For shipping or storage you can issue the command to set the SHIP bit

  • Hello Shirish-san,

    Thanks for your answer.

If precharging at low current, is it user controlled? Does the device automatically regulate low current?

Also, the customer said that when charging an empty battery, it would be around 1.5V.
Is this also because of the current limit?

I have an additional question about low power mode.
Does this low-power operating mode require any register settings? Or is it set automatically?

  • Hello Ishiwata-san,

The device cannot control the current, it can only control the FET state (on/off).

1.5V is a very low voltage for Li-ion battery, so customer may have meant that as the threshold for pre-charge voltage

Sleep and hibernate modes are entered automatically
