LM5160A: LM5160A maximum output power

Hello,

I want to design 14.8V/ 1.5A power supply by using LM5160A switching regulator IC. My Input voltage will be 28V/4A and my power wattage requirement is 22.2. My only concern is that maximum Output power the IC could provide. I gone through the datasheet but I'm not able to find any data related to the maximum output power that IC (LM5160) could support. Please help me regarding this.

Hello Nisha,

Thank you for reaching out and considering our products in your design. The LM5160A has a peak current limit of at least 1.9A. Selecting your inductor to have a ripple current of not exceeding 40% , then the circuit will support 1.5A load current.

If your Iomax is 1.5A, then the peak current = Iomax *1.2 =1.8A <1.9A

I appreciate your response. My query is that, whether this buck converter (LM5160A) can support 1.5A/ 15V output or not.

Hello Nisha,

It is within the power capability range of the device. Please pay attention to thermal management if 1.5A load is continuous.

Hello Youhao,

Thank you for your support. I refer TI' s document for power dissipation calculation { https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slva390a/slva390a.pdf?ts=1691478970800&ref_url=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.google.com%252F }. According to this document at 15 V / 2A, TA =85 C IC's junction temperature will be 130 C. That's why we are not considering this IC for our design.

Now we have selected TPS54561 IC and we are doing same calculation for this IC but the problem is that in the datasheet of this IC we are not able to find low-side MOSFET's dc resistance. We got dc resistance only for the high-side MOSFET. for calculation we need this value, please help us regarding this.

Hi Nisha,

Thanks for your patience. TPS54561 is a non-synchronous converter with an internal HS MOSFET and an external LS catch diode.

The quickstart calculator attached should help you get a better idea if this IC is right for your design and give you some component values to get started.
