BQ40Z50: Application issues

Hi,

1、Is a secondary protection IC such as bq2947 is needed to work together with the gauge IC if the pack is 4S1P?

2、If the pack wants to communicate with a charger, and the charger also has a TI charge IC, which is the best choice of the three gauge ICs(bq4050,bq40z50,bq40z60)?

  • Hello Reed,

Let me start by saying that BQ4050 and BQ40z50 use the same hardware, they only differ in their gauging algorithm. BQ40z50 uses impedance track while BQ4050 uses CEDV.

1- The BQ4050/BQ40z50 and BQ40z60 come with integrated protections (these are primary protections). The BQ2947 is a secondary protection (this is optional). We showcase this solution because many customers want extra protection.

2-  The BQ4050/BQ40z50 are JEITA compatible with chargers, can be used in standalone with smart chargers (MCU is not required). The BQ40z60 is the same as BQ40z50 but with integrated charging solution. We tend to suggest BQ40z50 over BQ40z60 because firmware is older in the z60. The BQ40z50 has the most updated features.

    Differences between BQ40z50 and BQ40z60
